ANTHROPOLOGICAL FIELD & INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Anthropology (and related field) students are often encouraged to explore field opportunities to enhance their learning and to gain unique experiences - and going to the field can be a truly amazing learning and development experience (and is a cornerstone piece of multiple fields)! But there is a lot to consider - starting with, what opportunities are out there? If you're beginning to explore these options you've come to a good place - the Lawrence University (non-comprehensive but lengthy) guide to field opportunities.

How to use this Guide

This is a non-comprehensive, but lengthy, list of fieldwork and internship opportunities available to students from many anthropological fields. This guide is best used for help starting your search for field opportunities and for identifying key considerations or help you can receive for field experience. We provide a list of opportunities, broken out by sub-field, for students to explore. We also provide key considerations you should review when thinking about field work and some preliminary information to help you as you consider funding, credit, etc. Know that this guide is a great starting place, but we strongly encourage you to speak with your professors before embarking on any of the experiences.

Know that searching for field school opportunities can present a whole host of overwhelming, and exciting, possibilities. The list below is a good starting place and is updated when new opportunities become known, but if you know there is a particular place you want to go, internet searching “anthropological field school in insert location” or “archaeological field school in insert location” may give you opportunities not found through any of the links here. This is also true topically. If, for example, you search “medical anthropology field school” or “human-ecology field school” you will get very different results.

Explore the links. Answer the considerations questions. Maybe take some time and google on your own. Use this as a way to help you reduce your time investment at the start of the process. When you're ready, come talk to one of the Anthropology Faculty.
